On the historic day, Saturday the 13th of July 1936, the most Rev. Nakette Ananda had succeeded in gathering a few old boys of the school for the first time to initiate the Old Boys Association. This has been done after the school was shifted from Kandy road to the present location on Negombo Road.
At a meeting held on the same day, under the chairmanship of the principal Mr, U.B. Wanninayake, a decision had been taken to build a “Sanghawasaya” for the school. Rev. Nakatte Ananda had been elected as the patron, and Mr. Wanninayake as the president of the association of the very first meeting of the few old boys. The other officials elected at this meeting has been Mr, H.W.Gunasekara as secretary and Mr. E.S. Balasuriya as treasurer.
The very first task of the Old Boys’ Association had been the successful completion of the building for the “Sanghawasaya” by the year 1937. In the same year, the then British government had ordered the schools to organize sports activities to commemorate the birth of the king of Great Britain. Accordingly Maliyadeva too had held a sports meet with the participation of the Old Boys’ Association. That had been the inception of the annual sports meet, which since then had become a tradition and held annually with the participation and sponsorship of the O.B.A.
In honour of the first two old boys, Messrs T.B.Herath and S. Jayasekara who had been successful in gaining admission to the Teacher Traning College, a felicitation dinner had been held at the Kurunegala Rest House Under the leadership of the late Dr.H.K.T.de Zylva, the Manager of the School at the time. This event had probably been the beginning of another tradition - the Annual Old Boys’ dinner.
In the year 1949 Mr.U.B.Wanninayaka had retired from the post of Principal to take up more responsibilities in politics and government. With his retirement, he had also relinquished his duties as President of the O.B.A. The then Principal Mr.D.B.Tevarapperuma had functioned as the President of the O.B.A. It was during his presidency that the Old Boys’ dinner had been scheduled for the night on the day of the Annual Sports Meet which is held under the sponsorship of the O.B.A. This had been continued for a long time until 1989. The Annual general meeting of the Old Boys’ Associations had also been held on the day following the Old Boys’ Dinner up to 1989.
The first to gain entrance to the University of Ceylon as Students who had received their education at Maliyadeva had been Mr.Willy Bandaranayake and Mr.D.B.Dissanayaka
After the appointment of Major E.A Perusinghe as Principal and his assuming the Presidency of an O.B.A ,the annual sports meet had attained a high standard with the full sponsorship of the O.B.A. It was during this period that the annual Cricket encounter - “St.Annes Vs Maiyadeva Big Match” was started.
In the year 1962 with the transfer of Mr.Perusinghe to Dharmaraja College,Kandy, Mr.D.B.Dissanayaka was appointed as Principal and has functioned as the President of the O.B.A. Subsequently in 1966 when Mr.Dissanayake stepped down to the post of Vice Principal due to ill-health, Mr.Ariyarathne Jayathilake, an old boy of Maliyadeva and former Principal of Narammala Central College was appointed as the Principal. As President of the O.B.A., Mr.Jaythilake had continued to carry forward the activities of the O.B.A. and had also initiated the opening of a Children’s home for the destitute Buddhist children in the area under the name of Maliyadeva Children's Home. Mr.Jaythilake had solicited the support of the old boys for this project.
In 1967, Mr.Ariayarathne Jayathilake was transferred as Principal to Narammal Central School at the request of the Department of Education, and Mr.D.B.Dissanayake re-assumed duties as Principal. With his transfer to Vidyarathne College Kandy as Principal in the latter part of 1967, Mr.M.B. Pethiyagoda was appointed as Principal of Maliyadeva. During the presidency of Mr.Pethiyagoda from late 1967 to the end of 1970. the O.B.A. had held a Carnival in the College Premises and playground to earn a sum of Rs.50,000/= to set up a trust found in the name of the O.B.A - an event recorded as a milestone in the history of the Old Boys’ Association.
In 1971 Mr.D.B.Dissanayake had assumed duties as Principal for the 2ndtime , and whilst functioning as the president of the O.B.A., had set up the Colombo branch of the O.B.A. He had also obtained the special legal privilege to admit 25% of children the old boys to the school. He had successfully harnessed the support of the joint secretaries of the O.B.A. and the old boy M.Ps of the Wayamba region for this worthy cause. Under the presidency and guidance of Mr. Dissanayake , the O.B.A. had also been successful in acquiring the land for the construction of the new playground which is under construction even up to date. He had also introduced the tradition of electing a president to the O.B.A. from its membership in order to give more autonomy for the old boys. He had brought this resolution at an annual general meeting and had offered to function as ex-officio patron while being the principal of the school. At the time this resolution was effected, Mr. E.S.Balasuriya had been the most senior old boy and the person who was closely associated with O.B.A. as well as the school. He was elected unanimously as the president of the O.B.A under the new tradition.
After the election of Mr.E.S. Balasuriya as president, a new constitution was dratted with a host of suitable provisions, of which was the appointment of an old boy serving in the tutorial staff as one of the joint secretaries of the O.B.A.
Mr.Balasuriya relinquished his duties as president after many years of great service. Mr.J Lankathilake was elected president after Mr. Balasuriya.
